A dog's life

We’re getting a dog. We have been trying to get a dog for a while now. Lily, my oldest, has been working on getting a dog for a couple of years.

She’s saved money, read books, and watched a lot of Dog Whisperer.

We first tried to adopt a retired greyhound but we weren’t quite the right family (yet). Now it looks like we’ll be getting a small puppy. We had a dog of the same breed named “Hamilton” when I was going to law school. I think the choice of breed was partly to win me over to getting the dog.

It worked. As soon as I seen those tiny puppies, it was over. But while we were visiting with the puppies and the owner, she brought up wanting to put something in place for her dogs in case something happened to her. That’s a responsible owner.

In Michigan you can make a trust for the care of a pet.

Helping people care for their pets when they can’t care for them any longer has been some of my favorite moments working with people with their wills and trusts. The people that care enough for their pets to go see a lawyer are always good people to work with.

Many times we set up the pet trust so that someone who the owner knows would take great care of their pets is entrusted with the pet after the owner’s death. Then some money is given to someone else to hold onto and use for any of the pet’s expenses. The pet gets a great caretaker and the caretaker doesn’t bear the burden of the expenses of a new pet.

Can’t wait for our new pup….
